Wonderbrass mark birthday with Olympic commission

Funky jazz band Wonderbrass are gearing up for London 2012 with performances of a specially commissioned piece of music to mark the Olympic Games.

With a new tune called Skip, Dash, Flow, they're the only Welsh act of the twenty taking part in New Music 20×12, a UK wide initiative to mark the games.

It'll be unveiled at The Globe, Albany Road, Cardiff, on Tuesday 21 February, ahead of the main performance at London's Southbank Centre in July.

Live music red tape cut for small venues

Small venues could be given clearance to stage live music without a licence thanks to new laws which overturn part of the 2003 Licensing Act.

If approved by the House of Lords on 10 February 2012, the bill already passed by MPs will remove much of the bureaucracy which led to many venues abandoning live music altogether.

The changes mean that a licence will no longer be required for unamplified live music between 8am and 11pm, and for amplified live music between those times if the audience is no more than 200 people.

Jazz, folk and other non-mainstream music was hit particularly hard by the 2003 legislation, whose backers claimed it would lead to an increase in live music.

Jazz Jam at Buffalo Bar

Buffalo Bar in Windsor Place, Cardiff, hosts its first jazz jam session this Sunday 29 January 2012.

It'll be led by Kitty's Trio - Greg Evans on drums, Steve Tarner on bass and Beverley Gough on saxophone and vocals.

It's from 8 till 10.45pm and costs £3 or £2 concessions.

The frequency of jam sessions is to be decided but if well supported they could be on a monthly or six weekly basis.

Brecon Jazz seeks new backer as Hay Festival pulls out

A search is beginning for a new promoter to run Brecon Jazz after the Hay Festival organisation announced that it is pulling out.

Brecon Jazz has suffered a number of financial difficulties, and the Hay Festival took over the running in 2009.

But director Peter Florence said it would be concentrating on the Hay Festival's 25th anniversary in 2012.

The Arts Council of Wales said funding would be available to other promoters willing to take over Brecon Jazz.

Former Brecon mayor Martin Wheale said a jazz festival would go ahead between 10-12 August next year.

Theatr Brycheiniog was a core venue in the new plans, he said, but there were other parties involved he declined to name.

Stan Tracey inspired again by Dylan Thomas

Stan Tracey has returned to Dylan Thomas for festive inspiration nearly fifty years after his seminal jazz suite based on Under Milk Wood.

A new suite based on A Child's Christmas in Wales includes the veteran pianist's first compositions for more than ten years.

A Child's Christmas Jazz Suite was recorded by Stan's current quartet, including son Clark on drums, with the addition of Stan's 21-year-old grandson Ben as narrator.

"I've always had a particular fondness for A Child's Christmas in Wales because it evokes so many memories of the festival when I was a child," said Stan.

"I was, therefore, delighted when Clark suggested that I should write something based on Dylan's story and wondered why I hadn't thought of it first.

"I hope the music reflects some of the pleasure it has given me."

The album is available on ReSteamed Records and is being performed in a series of Christmas dates around England.

Chris Hodgkins returns to Wales in October 2011 for his annual tour with his quartet.

Brecon Fringe launches with Melly sculpture fundraiser

The Brecon Fringe festival opens on Thursday 11 August with a concert in aid of the George Melly Sculpture Appeal.

The Jen Wilson Ensemble will play play Twelve Poems, a jazz suite setting the poems of Dylan Thomas to music at Theatr Brycheiniog.

The appeal has already raised £32,000 of the £100,000 needed to pay for a tribute to the late musician who is credited as putting Brecon Jazz on the international map.

Jazz 4 Jed and the Porthcawl International Jazz Festival are joining forces to stage a series of concerts during the Brecon Jazz Festival at the town's Guildhall over the weekend of 12 to 14 August 2011.

Attractions include The Numbers Racket on Friday 12 August; followed on Saturday by Wonderbrass, 5 Go Swing and John Etheridge; and the Heavy Quartet on Sunday.

Jazz 4 Jed will be using the event to raise money for the Jed Williams Memorial Fund, which has launched a bursary scheme to support Welsh jazz artists, as previously reported by Jazz in Wales.

Gwilym Simcock on Mercury list

Bangor-born pianist Gwilym Simcock has been shortlisted for this year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize with his album Good Days at Schloss Elmau.

Recorded with his trio and guests in the Bavarian Alps, it faces stiff competition from artists including Adele, Tinie Tempah, Katy B and James Blake.

The winning album of the year will be announced on September 7.

Cardiff's Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama is staging a Jazz Sunday on 26 June 2011 from 12 midday to 9pm.

The Dave Stapleton Quintet headlines the event at the college's redeveloped premises on North Road.

Also appearing are Purcell Re-Layed with Huw Warren and the big band sound of jazz orchestra Veritas.

There'll also be a range of free performances in the foyer from the Chris Gilligan/Stuart Power 4tet, the Trust Trio and Drum Machine.

Critic and author Stuart Nicholson will give a keynote speech before introducing a discussion on 'Living with Jazz'.

A day pass for all events costs £20 or £18 concessions, with individual ticketed concerts £7 or £5 concessions.

Jazz 4 Jed bursary

Leading jazz talent in Wales will benefit from a bursary set up in the name of Jed Williams, the man who created the Brecon Jazz festival and was a pioneer in the music until his death in 2003.

Applications are being sought for the first award in 2012, now that sufficient funds have been raised in memory of Jed.

Jazz 4 Jed was created in 2007 by a group of Jed’s friends and colleagues with the intention to commemorate his contribution to the development of jazz in Wales and throughout the UK.

The organisation aims to reflect his love of the music in performance, tastes, commitment to development and relationship to musicians and others involved.

Jazz 4 Jed spokesman Geoff Amos, who worked on Brecon Jazz for a number of years said: "This is a great thrill to be able to offer a bursary to young jazz talent in Wales in the name of Jed Williams, and it would be something he would have supported wholeheartedly."

The group set in motion a series of fund-raising events, culminating now with sufficient income to invite applications for the inaugural award for 2012.

Monday nights at Cafe Jazz

Live music returns to Monday nights at Cafe Jazz, St Mary Street, Cardiff with a monthly session by A New Old-Fashioned Jazz Band.

They'll be playing classic jazz and swing, light-hearted songs, and original writing, in the style of the 1930s New York.

The gigs take place on Monday 13 June and Monday 11 July 2011.

Admission is £3 or £2.50 concessions.

Jiveoholics van destroyed in arson attack

A jazz band from Monmouth are counting the cost of a trip to Northern Ireland after their van and much of their equipment was destroyed in a suspected arson attack.

The Jiveoholics had only played one show at the City of Derry Jazz and Blues Festival when they were woken early on Saturday morning by the fire service to say their vehicle had been burnt out.

The blaze caused over £30,000 worth of damage to the band's equipment and stage clothes.

Despite the fire, the band agreed to stay and play and with the help of many local businesses, Derry City council and the festival organisers they completed all 3 shows they were booked for and have already been invited back to take part in next year's jazz festival.

At this stage the band are unsure as to how much of the damaged equipment they can recover if any, but remain positive and have no plans to cancel any of their upcoming shows.

Band member Chris McGowan said: "We're all shocked at the amount of gear that's gone up in smoke but we'll try and make the best of it."

I'm doing a DJ set in support of Jadu, an Indo-jazz fusion group from west Wales who'll be playing the Jazz Revhw at Gwdihw, Guildford Crescent, Cardiff city centre this Thursday 5 May 2011.

Jadu means 'magic' in Hindi, and the magic is crafted by the talented hands of five extraordinary musicians, Pete Stacey on soprano sax and flute; Rajesh David, vocals and harmonium; Kelly Smith tabla; Paul Uden guitar and Bryan Smith on tamboura.

Jadu's music is a creative synthesis of classical Indian music and European Jazz exporing the musical frontiers of the country created by Coltrane, McLaughlin and Ravi Shankar, the pioneers of Indo-Jazz.

8pm start, admission £3.

Brecon Jazz 2011 headliners revealed

Femi Kuti, Allen Toussaint and Monty Alexander are among the headline acts confirmed for Brecon Jazz 2011.

The festival in the mid Wales market town also includes a one-off gig by former James Brown saxophonist Maceo Parker with the BBC Big Band.

Courtney Pine, John Surman, Clare Teal and Zoe Rahman are among stars from the UK jazz scene appearing this year.

The event, run by organisers of the Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts, takes place from 12 to 14 August.

It's been inspired by a DJ set I was asked to do for a friend's 40th birthday party in Pontypridd at the weekend which went down a storm - thanks Jeff!

Initially it'll be a case of me offering to do similar sets at open-minded clubs and bars in Cardiff, south Wales and beyond, maybe supporting or hiring bands for such events - as well as selecting the tunes I'll also play along on my clarinet, davul, darbuka or other instrument to help the night go with a gypsy swing.

Mindful of the comments a certain TV show has attracted over its authenticity, I should point out that BFGD will be a positive celebration of Gypsy and Roma inspired music from Eastern Europe, Turkey, the Mediterranean and beyond, along with Slavic, Arabic and Jewish tunes of a similar tempo if not Roma in origin.

Guitarist Dan Messore is launching a jam night on occasional Thursdays at the Cayo Arms, Cathedral Road, Cardiff CF11 9LL.

He'll make up the house trio with Aidan Thorne on bass and Mark O'Connor on drums.

They'll be joined by visiting guest musicians Geoff Simkins (March 3), Dave Cliff (March 17) and Steve Waterman (April 6).

Porthcawl International Jazz Festival - April 22 to 25

Buddy Greco, National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Jacqui Dankworth, Geoff Eales, Jiggs Whigham and the Syd Lawrence Orchestra are among the attractions of the 2011 Porthcawl International Jazz Festival.

Upwards of 130 musicians from 13 nations will be descending on the town over the Easter weekend (Friday 22 to Monday 25 April) for an event presenting up and coming new talent alongside some of the most established names in the jazz world.

Other attractions include New York funky jazz guitarist BD Lenz, Icelandic singer Claudia Gunners, and Polish trumpeter Tomasz Nowak from Nigel Kennedy's jazz band.

Festival Director Wayne Warlow says: "The 2011 Festival is the culmination of 10 years of continuous development and expansion.

"The fact that we have been able to attract such high calibre acts from across the globe is testament to the growing reputation of the festival throughout the jazz world.

"Porthcawl provides a perfect setting for this kind of event," he added.

"It's small enough to get around quickly and easily there's something about the seaside setting that puts people in the holiday mood."

New venue for jazz in Swansea

Jen Wilson and Elissa Evans will be playing the opening gig for a new jazz venue in Swansea this Friday 18 February.

The Americano Jazz Caffe has opened in the city's SA1 waterside development, in the Prince of Wales Dock, behind the Altamar apartments on Kings Road and just to the right of the historic J Shed.

Jen and Elissa's gig starts at 7.30pm and admission is free - they'll be playing a sultry and smooth set of old blues and jazz.

That's followed on Saturday with another free gig at 7.3pm with the G&E Duo - Greg and Elissa offering a mix of Ella-esque and Jobim-bossa music.

Osian Roberts/Steve Fishwick Quintet tour

Tenor saxophonist Osian Roberts returns to his native Cardiff as part of a tour with his quintet co-led by trumpter Steve Fishwick.

Osian learnt his chops as a teenager at the weekly jam sessions at the old Four Bars Inn (now Dempseys) opposite Cardiff Castle before attending the Royal Academy of Music in London.

He's since performed in more than twenty countries worldwide with stars like Dave Cliff, Peter King, Cedar Walton and others.

The quintet's tour includes the following dates:

Thurs 10 February - Cardiff: Cafe Jazz
Friday 11 February - Pontypool: Open Hearth, Sebastopol

Wonderbrass win Olympic commission

Cardiff-based jazz band Wonderbrass have won a commission to create new music to mark the 2012 London Olympics.

They'll be reunited with musician and composer Jason Yarde of Jazz Jamaica fame for the New Music 20x12 project run by the PRS for Music Foundation.

Wonderbrass are the only representatives from Wales among the twenty organisations selected to offer a snapshot of the quality and diversity of new music in the UK.

Each piece will be broadcast by BBC Radio 3 and tour the UK as part of the Cultural Olympiad in the run up to the 2012 Games.

Pimp your horn and keep it warm

A designer from Cardiff has hit the right note with her protective sleeve for trumpets which keeps the instrument warm in cold weather.

Ali Kedge devised the Warmahorn as an accessory for young musicians to decorate and protect their trumpet.

She also found that the sleeve made of wetsuit fabric helps improve the tone of cheaper instruments in all weather.

Orders for the product have come from individuals and stores across the UK and Holland with two major pop acts also showing an interest.

Ali, who works as a costume designer, came up with the idea after seeing trumpeter Jonny Bruce struggle at a cold outdoor gig with her jazz singer daughter Ruby Samba.

At Ruby's suggestion she made a little coat out of fun fur for Jonny's trumpet which soon became a hit with other musicians.

Welsh jazz promoters praised by Hodgkins

One of the UK's leading jazz administrators praises a "territorial army" of volunteers who ensure the music survives despite spending cuts.

Chris Hodgkins, director of Jazz Services UK, shared his thoughts as he returned to Wales for a short tour.

The Essex-born trumpeter grew up in Cardiff and helped launch the Welsh Jazz Society before moving to London.

He says politicians need to treat volunteers with respect if they expect them to make up for cuts in grants.

Gypsy jazz stars 5 Go Swing launch their new CD with a special gig at Gwdihw, Guildford Crescent, Cardiff city centre tonight - Thursday 7 October 2010.

I'll be doing a gypsy jazz DJ set to open the night at 8pm until the band take the stage.

After they've played I'll be stepping up the pace with some lively Balkan beats and gypsy tunes till the end of the night - including live Balkan drumming and percussion!

Pontypool Jazz Festival - 3 to 5 September

The annual Pontypool Jazz Festival returns this weekend from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 September.

It's a celebration of Welsh jazz talent with a line-up including The Numbers Racket, Bluesy Susie, Wonderbrass, the Root Doctors, the Constellation Big Band and many more.

All events take place in the Active Living Centre in Pontypool Park, with an opening concert on Friday night and two full days of gigs on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets cost £5 for the Friday night concert with wristbands allowing entry to all gigs on Saturday and Sunday available for £5 per day.

Torfaen Jazz Society is moving its Friday night sessions to the Open Hearth pub in Sebastopol near Pontypool.

They've decided to leave the nearby Sebastopol Social Club after many years due to a lack of atmosphere and uncertainty over whether the bar would be open.

The Open Hearth will be well known to Torfaen Jazz regulars as a venue for its weekend jazz festivals.

Pembrokeshire Jazz'n'Blues 2010

The seventh annual Pembrokeshire Jazz'n'Blues Festival takes places over the Bank Holiday weekend of 26 to 30 August 2010.

Laura Collins, Arun Ghosh, 5 Go Swing, Nik Turner, Mike Markey and Nick Jones are among nearly thirty acts playing various venues in and around Fishguard.

Meanwhile the Spanjazz sessions continue on a monthly basis at The Dingle Club, Jesse Road, Narberth.

The resident band is led by tenorist Jim Luxton and every third month a star soloist plays with John Gibbon Trio.

On Wednesday 15 September there's a sitters-in session with the house trio, followed by the Dominic Norcross Quartet on October 13, then Henry Lowther with the John Gibbon Trio on November 3.

Brecon Jazz preview on Radio Cardiff

There's a special Brecon Jazz edition of the Jazz Connection this coming Monday 2 August 2010 at 8pm on Radio Cardiff 98.7 FM.

As in previous years, I'll be playing tracks from some of the big international names, UK stars and local heroes due to play the Brecon Jazz and Brecon Fringe festivals in the mid Wales market town from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 August.

Adamant anger over Brecon parade snub

Members of the Adamant band are upset at a decision to leave them out of the street parade at this year's Brecon Jazz Festival on Sunday 8 August for the first time in the event's 26 year history.

Festival director Peter Florence is quoted in the Brecon & Radnor Express as saying: "They've played a lot of parades and are playing the Cathedral Service but I'm sure it's time for a change."

"If you do the same thing every year then Brecon ends up exactly the same and that's not always a good thing."

Mr Florence is also quoted as saying: "I think it's time for burning sacred cows to be honest and I really want to do something more interesting with better musicians."

Responding to the article, Adamant parade marshal Jim Wood said he was amazed at Mr Florence's comments, pointing out that "he was more than delighted to use these 'sub standard' musicians in his successful bid for funding" from the Arts Council of Wales.

Chris Hodgkins, director of Jazz Services UK, added: "Brecon Jazz Festival is in receipt of circa £100,000 of Welsh taxpayer's money and it will probably come as a surprise to Mr Florence of Hay-on-Wye that those musicians who he has so rudely eschewed are also the same people who pay taxes."

He added: "This year's festival is notable for the lack of Welsh jazz musicians playing, apart from a student ensemble, who I hope will be properly remunerated for their work."

Jazz Attic Jam change of night

The long running Jazz Attic jam sessions at Cafe Jazz in Cardiff will be moving from Mondays to Wednesday nights starting in August.

There'll be sessions on August 25 and September 15 before continuing on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month from October onwards.

The jam sessions offer guest musicians the chance to play with a house trio featuring leading figures from the south Wales jazz scene.

There's no word on whether Cafe Jazz is planning to offer any alternative entertainment on Monday nights.

Brecon Fringe line-up unveiled

The line-up for this year's Brecon Fringe festival includes the Numbers Racket, Funhouse, Wonderbrass, The Amigos and Tredegar Town Band.

The 2010 event takes place from Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 August alongside the Brecon Jazz Festival.

Fringe venues include pubs, hotels, clubs, galleries, Brecon Beacons National Park Visitor Centre and the grounds of Brecon Cathedral with many events free of charge.

Karin Mear, who is involved with producing the fringe guide, said: "The festival has gone from strength to strength and this year promises to be better than ever with new venues and an exciting programme."

Jazz students set for Brecon festival gig

Aspiring musicians are being given a chance to perform at the Brecon Jazz Festival by taking part in a new summer school in Cardiff.

The festival is giving a slot on its main stage to students on the week long course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama starting Monday 2 August.

The new project is led by Brecon jazz festival regular Paula Gardiner.

It gives students the chance to work alongside leading jazz artists with the added goal of a festival performance at Christ College on Sunday 8 August.

Barker and Shaw at the Movies in Llandeilo

Guy Barker and Ian Shaw join forces for a jazz celebration of the silver screen as part of this year's Llandeilo Fawr Festival in Carmarthenshire.

The trumpeter and the Welsh-born singer will be performing at the Cawdor Hotel on Thursday 15 July 2010.

The festival also includes a concert by the National Big Band of Wales in the courtyard at Newton House on Sunday 11 July.

Stuart Burrows, the Swingle Singers and Gwyn Hughes Jones are among the other attractions.

Brecon Jazz line-up unveiled

Hugh Masekela, Kyle Eastwood, Charlie Musselwhite, Neil Cowley, Acker Bilk and Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club with Omara Portuondo are among the attractions of the 2010 Brecon Jazz Festival from August 6 to 8.

The programme also features the best of the current crop of UK jazz talent, including Portico Quartet, Get the Blessing, the Dave Stapleton Quintet and the Kairos Quartet.

The venues this year are Brecon Cathedral, Brecon Market Hall, Christ College and Theatr Brycheiniog.

Cardiff band in Future jazz semis

Farmyard Cannibals from Cardiff have made it through to the semi-final of a competition to find new jazz talent run by Future Inns.

They'll battle it out against three other bands – The Swiss from Devon and Bristol's Lund Quartet and All-In-One Helmet – at the semi-final on Saturday May 8 held at Future Inns' hotel in Cabot Circus, Bristol.

The two bands judged the best will go through to the final.

Farmyard Cannibals are 19-year-olds Huw Williams on bass, Ben Treacher on sax and Lloyd Haines on drums, with 20-year-old Joe Webb on piano. They are all students at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama studying jazz.

Huw said: "We're so chuffed to get through to the semi-final of the competition, giving us the chance to play in England for the first time and reach a different audience. And of course, we'd love to win!

"We all had massive colds and flu when we recorded the demo so we didn’t expect to get through, making us extra happy now we have.

"Our band formed last April and we’re heavily influenced by South American music. Our sound is quite energetic, quite modern, high-energy contemporary jazz.

"Jazz offers amazing freedom of expression - you can improvise, you can do anything. After college, we all hope to make a living out of playing jazz, so this competition is a brilliant chance for us.

"Cardiff definitely has a vibrant jazz scene that's growing in popularity. With two jazz clubs in our city and performers coming over from London, Cardiff is a great place to hear live jazz."

Jazz Heritage Wales is launched

Jazz Heritage Wales - a registered charity formerly known as Women in Jazz Swansea - will be officially launched at its new home on Swansea Metropolitan University’s Townhill campus next Wednesday 5 May.

A recipient of the Diversity Wales Award in 2003, the organisation delivers programmes to schools under their remit of PARE (Performance Archive Research Education) and has taken the roots of jazz music back to the 1830s when Wales had active anti-slavery and abolitionist movements.

The Jazz Heritage Wales archive includes a collection unique to Wales, holding thousands of photographs, recordings, journals and periodicals, as well as paintings and stage gowns donated by some of the world’s greatest female jazz artists.

The launch event will include live music from the Women in Jazz Allstars Swing Band and the Paula Gardiner Trio.

Butetown Bay Jazz - May 1 to 3

Guitarist Ciyo Brown, Li Harding, The Amigos and Coltrane Dedication are among the attractions of an expanded Butetown Bay Jazz festival in Cardiff this Saturday 1 to Monday 3 May 2010.

The free festival follows the success of last year's one-day event and aims to celebrate the musical heritage of Tiger Bay.

A stage at Mermaid Quay on the city's waterfront will be the focus of activities on Saturday and Monday, with Sunday's live music taking place in the foyer of the nearby Wales Millennium Centre.

There'll also be performances by young musicians and dancers from the bay, and workshops in guitar, creative writing and marketing for musicians.

Radio Cardiff DJs including Donna Zammit, Paddi, Steven Johnson, Rachel Price and myself will keep things moving between the live acts.

The event will also be broadcast live on Radio Cardiff from 11am till 6pm each day, although the live music continues into the evening.

Porthcawl Jazz Festival - April 15 to 18

Acker Bilk, Clare Teal and Michael Janisch head the line-up for this year's Porthcawl Jazz Festival from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 April.

The event also features a string of Welsh acts, including 5 Go Swing, the Liberty Street Jazz Band, Dave Jones Trio, Dave Cottle Trio, Graham Watkins Quartet and the Numbers Racket.

Most of the main events take place at the Grand Pavilion, with other gigs at various hotels in the town.

Jazz Goes To The Movies in Llanelli

Jazz is taking centre stage at Theatr Elli in Llanelli on Saturday 24 April when Digby Fairweather presents Jazz Goes To The Movies.

The show features the trumpeter's poll-winning Half Dozen and singer Val Wiseman, star of her own Billie Holiday tribute Lady Sings the Blues.

The band will present a fast-moving review of great songs from great movies - including classics from the American Musicals songbook, Disney themes, jazz to spare and romantic ballads.

Linked with memories of famous moments from the movies and stories of their stars, the show promises - as Louis B Meyer once said - more musical memories than all of the stars in heaven.

Tickets priced £15-£17 are available from the Theatr Elli box office on 0845 226 3510.
