George Melly's Last Stand

The digital channel BBC Four is screening a one-hour documentary about the late George Melly's final tour next Wednesday 7 November at 9pm.

George Melly's Last Stand follows the jazz legend and his wife Diana on the tour, including his final performance at a benefit gig at London's 100 Club, where his career began 60 years earlier.

Melly's Last Stand was all one hoped it would be. Although the subject of dementia is generally regarded as depressing the programme was not emotionally distressing at all. The Mellys bravely decided to show how dementia affected a marriage, a family and friends, the programme was down to earth, honest and full of fun. Diana who had remained in the background until recently was composed, generous and understanding. George, despite cancer, vascular dementia and fraility was George.

It was an inspired decision to allow cameras and microphones capture the last days of a very brave man and his remarkable wife.

I simply have to endorse the first poster's comments. A truly remarkable film. Full of passion and honesty.

Much kudos to the film makers, George Melly and his loving wife in preserving what must surely be one of the greatest tributes to a performers life and allowing us to get a very personal account of the human condition.

This is a film everyone should watch.
