George Melly's Last Stand on BBC Two

There's another chance to see a moving documentary about the final months of George Melly's life on BBC Two on Sunday 17 February at 10pm.

Melly, one of the founding patrons of the Brecon Jazz Festival, died in July 2007 at the age of 80.

The programme follows the larger-than-life jazz legend on his final tour, determined to entertain to the very end despite his increasing frailty.

This was more than a programme about a man of many talents best known as a jazz singer, who lived as he pleased and was able to keep performing until his end of days. It was statement about what life can be despite the most horrendous of mental and physical disabilities known to human kind and how to understand and face death... It was also a programme about the nature of love.

As a young man I first saw George the singer with the Mick Mulligan band at the Cy Laurie Club in Great Windmill Street in the mid fifties and enjoyed his music and, his writings ever since. A special word of praise for his wife who fortunately has the family and friends to fill the void.

What can you say about this larger than life legend, I greatly admired him both for his music and life-style. A great entertainer right to the end. will be sadly missed.
