theJazz star - could it be you?

Could you be the next big thing? UK digital radio station theJazz is celebrating its first birthday on Christmas Day with the launch of a competition to find the country's next big jazz star.

theJazz Star will give one budding jazz musician a record contract with the station’s own record label.

The winner will also be given a nationwide concert tour and a platform from which to launch their career.

The nationwide search is open to instrumentalists under the age of 25 and restricted to performers who haven’t had an album professionally released or distributed.

Entrants will be invited to upload a performance to theJazz website.

A shortlist will then perform live before a panel of judges that includes Dickon Stainer, Managing Director of UCJ; Darren Henley, Managing Director of theJazz; and Tim Lihoreau, Creative Director of theJazz.

Judges will be looking for a performer who can broaden the appeal of jazz music in the UK.

Managing Director of theJazz, Darren Henley said: "Young jazz musicians are the forgotten heroes of the British music scene. We want to right that wrong and give these brilliant young musicians a national platform for their music."

See www.thejazz.com for details.

Radio Cardiff - listen live online

Radio Cardiff - home of my Jazz Connection show - is now available to listen to live online if you can't pick it up on 98.7 FM.

Click the Listen Live links at
www.radiocardiff.org or www.jazz-connection.co.uk/radio.shtml

Daytime is mostly soulful black sounds and community news, while there's plenty of specialist music in the evening and weekends - bhangra, drum'n'bass, house, world music and, of course, jazz!

Don't miss the next edition of the Jazz Connection - a festive special at 8pm on Christmas Eve. I'll try and put the show online so you can listen anytime over the holiday period.
