The Swansea-based Women in Jazz organisation is moving into new premises at Swansea Metropolitan University, with a new name - Jazz Heritage Wales.

The collection of recordings, photographs, books, stage gowns, artefacts and memorabilia will now be housed in the main library on the Townhill campus, under the care of the University Records and Archives Office.

The new office space will provide full access to its resources for students, researchers, media and the general public.

"The multi-media jazz collection is unique to Wales and the UK. It offers a huge resource for music, music technology, photography, socio-historical research, politics, and cultural heritage.

"Talks and lectures will continue for community groups and international conferences. The performance side will be retained under the Women in Jazz banner at festivals and functions; the popular Swing Band Workshops will continue to run, as will its school tours of the in-house production of Before Freedom and performances.

"I would like to thank our Trustees, volunteers and musicians who have worked hard helping keep the organisation on track, and for the support and encouragement we have received from Swansea Metropolitan University".

Patron Dame Cleo Laine said: "I am very pleased to support this exciting venture and hope I will be able to fit in a visit to Swansea again to see the new home."

The exhibition Crossing Oceans: Wales Slavery and its Music will be on display for Dame Cleo Laine, Sir John Dankworth & Friends at their Wavendon Music in the Garden series on Sunday 19th July 2009. Dame Cleo is featured on one of the exhibition panels.

Welsh Jazz Awards celebrate local talent

Jazz musicians and promoters have been celebrated at the all new Welsh Jazz Awards presented as part of the Cardiff Jazz Festival.

Little Fish were named the Best Jazz Band, with the Dave Cottle Trio runners-up and the Jones O'Connor Group third.

Lee Goodall - a member of Little Fish - was named Best Solo Musician, with Osian Roberts runner-up and Huw Warren third.

Dempseys in Cardiff was voted the Best Jazz Venue, Swansea Jazzland second, and third place tied between Cafe Jazz in Cardiff and the Queen's Head in Monmouth.

Alistair and Brenda thanked the audience for supporting their work at Dempseys, with Alistair adding that credit was due to the bands who were willing to play for "very little money" (or words to that effect...)

The awards were voted for by jazz fans visiting the website at www.cardiffjazzfestival.com and were presented at the Globe in Cardiff last night.

Little Fish can be seen at the Globe tonight, Monday 8 June, as part of a triple bill including the Dave Stapleton Quintet and Burum.
